VIRTUAL REALITY

RAILWAYS

Together with the NS we developed a virtual reality (VR) solution for the annual retraining of train drivers. The main objective of the learning solution is for the operator to practice the critical infrequent aspects of operating procedures. NS is testing the effectiveness of the solution, practical applicability and the drivers’ experiences with a small group of train drivers.

The question

3500 NS drivers participate in the annually recurring national re-instructions. Engine drivers are scheduled to be absent for a whole day for the re-training, and the equipment also has to be available. NS has now replaced the practical re-instruction on the equipment with a more flexible knowledge-oriented online offer with remote guidance. NS is looking into whether an added VR solution can offer additional qualitative value in maintaining the desired level of expertise.

The solution

The main objective of the learning solution is for the operator to practice the critical infrequent aspects of operating procedures.

By using 360° photos, we create a realistic and recognizable environment for the operator. In this virtual reality (VR) it seems to the train drivers as if they are actually present in the train set.

On the basis of predetermined critical incidents, the driver practises with realistic practical situations. The complexity of the knowledge and skill required for these critical incidents ranges from easy to difficult. Can the driver go to the right place in the train? Can the driver find the right lever? Does the driver know the correct sequence?

Result

An online learning solution was created in CenarioVR. This commercial tool makes it possible to develop affordable VR solutions in an accessible way. The result is perfect to follow with VR glasses. Of course this can also be done with a desktop or laptop.

NS is testing the effectiveness of the solution, practical applicability and the drivers’ experiences with a small group of train drivers.
